Carved lacquer is our traditional craft, enjoying equal popularity with cloisonne. It started for Tang Dynasty, got popular in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Background carved lacquer has been famous in the world from the early of Ming Dynasty. After Kuang-hsu emperor in Qing Dynasty, carved lacquer crafts are only manufactured in Beijing around the world.
Carved lacquer is our traditional craft, with complicated technology from Tang Dynasty and was popular in Ming and Qing Dynasty.
The most important process of the craft is carving with main material of lacquer. There are metal bond and non-metal bond, the former one is covered by enamel while the latter one is covered by lacquer. The lacquer is painted layer by layer, two times one day. The quantity of layers is at least dozens of and at most of that is hundreds of . Then carve it according to designed draft with knife rather than pencil, it can be carved into embossed pattern like landscape, flowers and plants, figures etc.
The mainly used lacquer is vermilion with underpainting of yellow, green and black. Carved lacquerware can be divided into red-painted, green-painted and colors-painted with very complicated courses including making padding, enameling, making bottom, painting, carving, polishing and so on, every process has very high requirement.
In the early Ming Dynasty, carved lacquer craft has reached a very high level, generating an unique style with solemn and generous shape. In Qing Dynasty, carved lacquer has developed with fine and smooth pattern and focusing on carving, so the style is very different with Ming Dynasty. Nowadays, carved lacquer has a perfect combination with modern crafts and becoming more and more exquisite and smooth.
